A Complete Guide to the Flu Vaccine: Who needs it, when should you get it and where to get it in Port Macquarie.

A Complete Guide to the Flu Vaccine: Who needs it, when should you get it and where to get it in Port Macquarie.

May 2024

In Australia, we’re saying goodbye to Summer and hello to cooler days…and a fast-approaching flu season.

Staying informed about the influenza vaccination is more important than ever. The 2024 seasonal influenza vaccination program comes with some updates and recommendations that are crucial for ensuring community health. We field many questions about the vaccination at our Port Macquarie Pharmacy, so here’s everything you need to know about this year's flu vaccine.

This guide will cover some frequently asked questions, who should get it, the best time for vaccination, and where you can receive it in Port Macquarie.

What is Influenza, and How is it Different to a Cold?

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It's often confused with the common cold, yet the flu is more severe, with symptoms including high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, coughing, and fatigue.

Unlike a cold, which can gradually develop over a few days, flu symptoms can appear suddenly and can lead to serious complications, especially in high-risk groups

Why Getting Vaccinated is Important

The flu vaccine is the first line of defence against influenza, significantly reducing the risk of severe illness, hospitalisations, and death.

By getting vaccinated, you're not only protecting yourself but also helping to shield vulnerable populations from the virus.

Who Should Get Vaccinated

Everyone aged 6 months and over is recommended to receive the flu vaccine. Vaccination is particularly important for:

  • Children aged 6 months to less than 5 years
  • Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
  • People aged 65 years and over
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Individuals with specified medical conditions that increase the risk of influenza complications
  • Healthcare workers and anyone living with or caring for individuals at high risk of flu complications

When Should You Get the Flu Vaccine?

The best time to get the flu vaccine is in autumn, before the flu season starts. This timing ensures your immune system has time to respond to the vaccine and provide protection during the peak flu months, which in Australia, are typically from June to September. However, getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial and is better than not getting vaccinated at all.

2024 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination: What’s New?

Key Updates from ATAGI:

  • Annual vaccination is recommended for all individuals aged 6 months and older.
  • A significant update for 2024 is the co-administration of the influenza vaccine with any COVID-19 vaccine, simplifying the vaccination process for patients.
  • Flucelvax Quad, a cell-based vaccine, is now included under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for at-risk individuals aged 5 to 64 years, offering more options for protection.
  • NIP vaccinations are also available for everyone aged 65 and over

Is the flu vaccine safe?

The flu vaccine is subject to rigorous safety standards, with its safety profile continuously monitored by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and AusVaxSafety, a national vaccine safety surveillance program.

This vigilant monitoring ensures that any potential concerns are quickly identified and addressed, maintaining the vaccine's high safety standards.

What are the side effects of the flu vaccine?

Like all vaccines, the flu vaccine can cause side effects, although most are generally mild and resolve without the need for medical intervention. These side effects usually occur soon after the vaccination and last for a short period.

Common side effects include:

  • Soreness at the Injection Site:
This is the most common side effect, manifesting as redness, swelling, or pain where the vaccine was administered. It typically resolves within a few days.
  • Low-grade Fever:
Some individuals may experience a mild fever as their immune system responds to the vaccine. This is a normal sign that the body is building protection against the virus.
  • Muscle Aches and Mild Fatigue:
Feelings of general discomfort or mild tiredness can occur, reflecting the body's immune response to the vaccine.

Less Common Side Effects:

While rare, there are a few less common side effects that can occur, including:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Allergic Reactions
